Maketu is a historic small town on the Bay of Plenty Coast in New Zealand. It is located on Okurei point and has an estuary from which the Kaituna River used to flow out of, it is also adjacent to Newdicks Beach located on the south eastern side of Okurei point.
It was the traditional landing site of the Te Arawa canoe. Maketu is named after an ancient kumara (sweet potato) pit in Hawaiki, the mythical place where, according to Maori oral tradition, the Maori sailed from.
Maketu has a predominantly Maori population. It is close proximity to coastal towns of Te Puke, Mount Maunganui, Papamoa beach, Little Waihi, Pukehina and Tauranga.
Other tourist attractions such as Rotorua, Matata, and Whakatane are all within one hour's drive from Maketu.
Come and see the traditional Maori cultural shows, learn Maori dance, learn how to do the Haka, and taste the hangi at Uncle Boy's Place. Booking is essential.
